Yesterday, Tricia Nakamatsu officially filed to run for the Hawai‘i State Senate in District 13, launching a campaign rooted in community, public service, and a commitment to local families. Senate District 13 encompasses Dowsett Highlands, Pu‘unui, Nu‘uanu, Pacific Heights, Pauoa, Punchbowl, Pālama, Liliha, Iwilei, Chinatown, and Downtown.

“As a fourth-generation resident of this district—with my children representing the next generation—my family’s roots here run deep, and my commitment to this community is lifelong. I am running for State Senate because I believe we deserve government systems that actually work for the people. ” said Tricia.

Proudly representing five generations of Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan heritage in Hawai‘i, Tricia has dedicated the past 20 years of her career to public service, serving as a Deputy Corporation Counsel, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, and currently as a Deputy Attorney General. Throughout these experiences, Tricia tackled complex legal and legislative issues with an emphasis on collaboration, thoughtful policymaking, and strengthening our local communities.

“Over the past two decades, I have served the people of O‘ahu and Hawai‘i with diligence, integrity, and perseverance—as a public servant and a professional,” continued Tricia. “I’ve spent my career working within our systems to make our communities safer and government more responsive. I’m running for State Senate to provide that same proactive, professional representation to District 13 and communities across the state. Whether it’s expanding access to mental health or substance abuse treatment for those who need it, making our government more accountable and accessible to the people, or ensuring our roads are safe for everyone, especially our keiki & kupuna, I believe we need proven leadership that delivers results.”

“I’d like to thank Senator Rhoads for his years of dedicated service to the families of District 13. I’m excited to officially file as a candidate in this race and continue his work as a champion of public safety and advocate for our community. It would be an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity, and I invite all those who call District 13 home to join me as we work together to implement effective, compassionate, long-term solutions that allow our families to thrive.”
